Mulch volume = area × depth (converted to feet). Standard depth is 2–4 inches. Bagged mulch is commonly sold in 2 cu ft bags. Buying by the cubic yard is cheaper for beds over ~6 yards.
2 to 4 inches. Less won't suppress weeds; more than 4 can suffocate plant roots and trap moisture, inviting rot.
