Long division splits a large number by a smaller one systematically. Quotient = how many times divisor fits. Remainder = what is left over. Check: Quotient × Divisor + Remainder = Dividend.
The amount left over after dividing as many whole times as possible. E.g. 17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2 (because 5×3=15, and 17-15=2).
